The Lester Smith Photography Contest
During the month of February and March, the Kent Memorial Library will hold a photography contest for Suffield adults and students in grades 1 through 12 who reside and/or attend Suffield schools. Prize money will be awarded by the Friends of the Kent Memorial Library.
What to Enter
We are seeking unpublished, mounted photographs of Suffield. The photographs can be in black & white or color and should highlight the beauty and diversity of Suffield in its people, buildings, history, and landscapes. The image size should be no smaller than 4 X 5 inches and no bigger than 11 X 14 inches. The mounted size must be no larger than 16 X 20 inches. There is no admission charge. An application form must be attached to the back of the photography.
Because we would love to be able to feature the winning photos on Facebook, Instagram, the library website and publications, we ask that you also email a JPEG image of your photograph.
The digital image with contact information and its contest category should be sent to Jackie Hemond, the Library Director, at email@example.com
Each person may enter only 1 photograph. Photos may have been taken at any time prior to or during the Contest.
All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond recognition may not be entered. The removal of dust, cropping, minor adjustments to color and contrast, etc. are acceptable
WHEN TO ENTER: The contest is open during the month of February and March. Photographs and digital images must be received by March 31. The application form will be available on suffield-library.org and at the library.
RESULTS POSTED: The results will be posted in the April 2018 issue of The Suffield Observer. As soon as The Observer has been published and distributed, the Kent Memorial Library will publish the results on the library’s website: www.suffield-library.org.
OPENING: The winning photographs and as many of the other photographs that can fit on the walls will be displayed at the Kent Memorial Library, 61 Ffyler Place in April 2018 until Friday, April 27. The photographs should be picked up on Saturday, April 28 or Monday, April 30. The opening reception will be Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at which time the awards will be given out. Winners need not be present.
Entrants must submit their photographs in a single category that best fits the image. Each photograph may only be assigned one category.
- Faces in Suffield
We want to see your best shots of Suffield people. Note: A signed release from any recognizable people in your photograph is required.
- Suffield Landscapes
Show us how varied the Suffield landscape can be, with rolling hills, tobacco fields and stands of trees (and everything in between) in snow, rain or sun. Please identify the location of your photograph.
- Suffield History
This category can encompass buildings, graveyards, or anything which can be deemed historical in our town.
One grand prize winner will be awarded $50. The top winner for each age group in each of the categories (a total of 9 possible winners) will receive $25. At least 9 honorable winners will be awarded $10 each. Additional honorable mentions may be awarded at the discretion of the judge.
Winners will be selected by a panel of experienced photographers based on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. All decisions made by the jury is final.
By entering the photo contest, you hereby grant the Kent Memorial Library the ability to publish your photos in any Kent Memorial Library publication – whether print or digital and have the right to use your name in such publications. This includes the right to use your photos on the library’s website, in print and electronic advertisements and promotions.
